A few words about the venue for INPUT 2009
The Palace of Culture and Science turned 50 on July 22, 2005. It was built in short order following the second world war in the middle of a nearly completely destroyed Warsaw. The skyscraper was built “as a gift from the soviet people to the Polish nation,” and the originator of the project was Joseph Stalin. Lew Rudniew designed the building in the spirit of traditional, soviet social-realism.
It is the highest building in Poland, measuring 230.68 meters to the top of the spire, and it has 42 floors. At a height of 114 meters, on the 30th floor, there is an observation deck from which one an admire the panorama of Warsaw. There are 3,288 rooms in the Palace and it has an area of 123,084 square meters (1,324,876 square feet). It contains cinemas, theaters, high schools, the Congress Hall, museums, and the Youth Palace with a swimming pool. Various exhibitions and trade fair are held here as well.
New Years Eve, 2000, saw the unveiling of the second largest clock in Europe at the top pf the building. Each of its four faces had a diameter of six meters. It is also the second highest clock in the world after the one on the NTT DoCoMo Tower in Tokyo.
Tough originally hated as a symbol of soviet domination, the Palace has become part of Warsaw’s skyline and its symbol. Warsaw’s residents have grown used to their building, their Palace of Culture and Science.
