No Pix
“The title of the session refers mainly to the fact that the camera often causes people to be reluctant to give their honest opinions. It is then difficult to verify what is the truth and what is a lie.” explains Claudia Schreiner, Shopsteward for the session. With this in mind, the films proposed during the screening “No Pix- no problem” took advantage mainly of the benefits of cartoon animation.
“Chicago 10” is enhanced by the animation – the main defendants, the leaders of the anti-Vietnam, anti-capitalist Yippy movement, were represented by cartoon characters. The film proposes a new outlook on the events of 1968 and its myths. Claudie Schreiner doesn’t debunk them, but rather presents new facts from a precedent-setting case that took place in 1969. It is a specific protest, a cry directed towards the incompetence and bias of the trials. “The Oil Game” seems to be about the boring oil business, but it proposes a closer look at the conflicts of corporations and government, as numerous manipulations. Since the year 2000 the public in Norway was against exploiting the Barents Sea and drilling oil wells.
“The matter is very controversial. It’s difficult to speak about these matters without any accusations, because the people involved in the process are still active on Norway’s political and economical scene. Why did we use such minimalist means of expression? First of all, our budget was very small, second, I personally think that a picture involving real actors and not amateurs would direct attention away from the essence of the problem.“ stated director Svein Baren. Katrin Rothe, the director of the educational series, “What Do You Do?” thinks that the stories presented there are very true but the characters were replaced by animated creatures. “That makes reception easier to understand, funnier, though the problems often seem infantile.”
